e lake, about ten kilometres long and one kilometre wide, lies in the broad Cicolano Valley in the ancient land of the Aequi, dotted with ancient towns and small villages perched on hilltops. Other towns formerly existed in the area now occupied by the reservoir. Borgo San Pietro, Tiglieto, Fiumata and Sant'Ippolito were rebuilt on the lake shores and have now become pleasant tourist centres.

Nature excursions around Lake del Salto The excursion starting from Petrella Salto ends at the Caves of Santa Filippa, where at a glance tourists can see the ruins of Mareri Castle, the range of the Navegna and Cervia mountains, and naturally the lake with its dam.

The lake winds among meadows and oak woods, in a broad landscape dominated by the Laga Mountains (2,458 m), impressive and snow-covered for much of the year. Its banks are peaceful and deserted, and there is a small village, La Conca, on a little peninsula.

A rural cycling tour in around lakes Ripasottile and Lungo, in the countryside of Rieti. Two natural oases protected by a regional reserve, to explore by bicycle along quiet lanes. From the Rieti city centre we follow the signs to the airport and then towards Terni-Piediluco. After about 7 chilometers we turn off towards the Lakes Ripasottile and Lungo Nature Reserve.
