In the Lazio Region three Holy Stairs can be found, where the pilgrims can obtain the indulgence. The most famous are the Sacred Steps, located close to the Basilica of St. John Lateran. According to tradition, the stair was transported to Rome in 326 A.D. by St. Helena, mother of the Emperor Costantino and climbed by Jesus before the interrogation by Pontius Pilate.
Another very important stair is located inside the Sanctuary of the Sacro Speco in Subiaco, climbed by St. Benedict on his way to the cave where he used to pray and today part of a chapel dedicated to the Saint. The third stair can be found inside the Basilica of Santa Maria Salome in Veroli, not far from the Abbey of Casamari, where the remains of the Saint were found in 1209, a witness of the martyrdom of Christ and mother of the apostles James and John the Evangelist.
