Rieti Underground has received the TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice award for the sixth consecutive year, thanks to the excellent visitor reviews throughout the year. The prize confirms the high quality and popularity of the Rieti Underground tour, now the main tourist attraction in Rieti and its province, which offers participants a true immersion in the history and architecture of the town. The itinerary leads visitors into the cellars of the palaces belonged to noble families, such as the Napoleoni and the Vecchiarelli, rediscovering a Roman Rieti that remained hidden for centuries. Among the most important and extraordinary stops, is the Roman viaduct that supported the ancient Via Salaria. Here, huge walls of local travertine blocks with large arches were erected, which hosted, in the Middle Ages, the cellars of the palaces built along the consular road.
