Among the natural beauties of the Park, the WWF Oasis of Lago Secco stands out. This wetland, at an altitude of 1,500 metres, is rich in streams and springs, such as the source of the Agro Nero, and also includes the permanent glacial Secco Lake, inhabited by a large colony of amphibians.

The Pantani Lakes, lying on a plateau at over 1,500 meters above sea level between the Sibillini Mountains and the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga Park, are of great importance for the community. The area, dotted with small glacial lakes, is home to animal and plant species dating back to the Quaternary Ice Age, and also hosts numerous wild animals.

The Pantani Lakes

In July and August, the heat and the presence of the euglena sanguinea algae make the lake waters turn red. Between Accumoli and the Pantani Lakes, in the area of Le Coste it is possible to organize picnics, interact with the animals of the farm, and visit the Church of the Madonna delle Coste. The hermitage, built between the twelfth and the thirteenth centuries is now a main pilgrimage destination during the Pentecosthost.

The fascinating Cammino Naturale dei Parchi, a 430-kilometre trail connecting Rome to L’Aquila, runs through the Central Apennines, crossing four Regional Natural Parks, two Regional Nature Reserves, and the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga from Accumoli to Amatrice. Not to be missed is the Apennine Festival, a unique event celebrated from dawn on the day of the Summer Solstice in the central Apennine regions.

In 2022, a slow tourism network of low-altitude hiking trails of approximately sixty kilometres was created. It covers part of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park and connects the seventeen hamlets of Accumoli. The CAI tracks are marked with red and white signs and wooden directional arrows.

Grisciano, Pasta alla Gricia

Among the typical dishes, the Pasta alla Gricia from the mountain hamlet of Grisciano, a sort of white Amatriciana, stands out. The simple recipe has been handed down by the ancient shepherds, who consumed it during the transhumance in the Laga mountains. Other local products are the Guanciale Amatriciano PGI and the Pecorino Amatriciano.

The Festival of the Pasta alla Gricia, accompanied by live folk music, takes place in Grisciano in mid-August. Very appreciated among the cured meats is the Mortadella Amatriciana PAT, also known as Marotta and only produced in Amatrice, Accumoli, and Leonessa.

Also in mid-August, in the hamlet of Roccasalli, the Pasta del Vergaro Festival takes place, a local dish prepared with ventresca, fresh and dry ricotta, and Pecorino Amatriciano.
