The settlement of Torrita Tiberina (RM), about 56 km from Rome, is located on a hilly ridge overlooking the Tiber or Tevere River among the municipalities of Nazzano and Filacciano.
Torrita’s dominant position on the river is precisely the aspect that determined its strategic importance over the course of history.
The urban centre climbs up to a high escarpment, where visitors can enjoy a splendid view of the Tiber Valley.
The town is part of the Nazzano Tevere-Farfa Regional Nature Reserve, characterized by very particular wetlands, a very suitable resting spot for migratory birds.
The town’s economy relies on the agricultural activity in the locality of Colli della Città, which grows forage in the plains adjacent to the Tiber and olives, the pride of Sabine olive oil.
The Pugliese statesman and politician Aldo Moro, who loved to stay in this small town just outside Rome, is buried in Torrita Tiberina.
Preserved in the church of San Tommaso Apostolo are some important paintings by Bernardino di Betto Betti, known as Pinturicchio, and by Carlo Maratta, a prominent figure of Roman painting in the second half of the 17th century.
A 13th-century canvas is preserved in the church of Santa Maria del Monte, originally from the 11th century with subsequent refurbishments.
