Piansano is located in the province of Viterbo, in a hilly area with an average altitude of 400 m above sea level, at just over 100 km from Rome.
Its origins date back to the Etruscan period when there was an urban settlement called Maternum in the area that is now called Po’ de Metino. It was a strategic location conveniently located near the important Tuscania, to which it was connected by Via Clodia.
It is a typical medieval village with stone buildings that seem to emerge naturally from the tuff rock spur on which the town is built, dominating the entire municipality. The area has a variety of soft rolling hills, is part of the Vulsini Volcanic District and its proximity to Lake Bolsena gives it a particularly pleasant climate. The majority of the landscape is characterized by pastures and crops, while the few surviving forests, mainly oak woods, are relegated to the more craggy areas.
In the town’s coat of arms there is a vine, a plant which was once widely cultivated in the area, but today it has almost completely disappeared.
