Fonte Nuova is located in the Lower Sabina along Via Nomentana, the main access route to the territory from the city of Rome, together with the course of the Tiber and Aniene rivers.
At the beginning of the first millennium BC, around the Via Nomentana were small towns like Nomentum, Ficulea, Caenina, Eretum, founded by the Sabines but soon conquered by the Romans.
In the Middle Ages the settlements made use of pre-existing Roman structures: bearing witness to that period in fact are numerous remains of guard or watchtowers, and castles (fortified farm estates), and we recall: Casale Tor Sant’Antonio, Castello di Monte Gentile and Tor Lupara.
The Nomentum Nature Reserve covers about 850 hectares in a hilly area with altitudes of just over 200 metres and is comprised of the green areas of Macchia Trentani, Valle Cavallara, Macchia Mancini, the archaeological area of Monte d’Oro, a part of Casali di Mentana and historic centre of Mentana, and the agricultural area of Monte Pizzuto.
The local gastronomy is related to Roman cuisine.
Especially noteworthy are the “panzerotti alla romana”, pasta with olives and squash, the mustaccioli, typical desserts covered with a chocolate glaze and, inside, a soft pastry with a honey flavour and candied fruit.
