Located between the cities of Viterbo and Orvieto, the ancient village of Civitella d’Agliano is famous for the medieval architecture in its historic centre and the contemporary art park in La Serpara Valley.
Overlooking the village’s central piazza, where five lanes converge in a radial pattern, one with the rather curious name “Caccia gli altri (Hunt the others)”, since it can be easily blocked to prevent access to the castle, is the Church of Madonna delle Grazie, the ancient parish of SS. Pietro e Callisto and the fort, Rocca Monaldeschi with its tower, the emblem of Civitella. The complex, dating to the 13th century, served as fortification and lookout point. The Rocca and tower, entirely functional up to the panoramic terrace overlooking the Tiber Valley, often host cultural events and manifestations.
La Serpara art garden, designed by the Swiss Paul Wiedmer, hosts more than thirty sculptures and installations, some created by the master and others donated by other contemporary artists. In this open-air museum, with visits by appointment only, the way the works are placed in nature is harmonious.
In the last weekend of July is the unmissable “Nelle Terre del Grechetto (In the Lands of Grechetto)”, while in August is a day of beer and pizza at the Sagra della Birra e della Pizza. In September, two traditional events: Festival del Vino e della Musica and on the 9th, the feast of the patron saint, Festa del Patrono San Gorgonio Martire. In December you can stroll through the Christmas Markets. Don’t miss tastings of the excellent local oil and white, rosé and red Civitella d’Agliano IGT wines, fine products that can always be found at the July and September local festivals.
