Located on the mountain of the same name (Collis Altus), Collalto Sabino preserves an atmosphere of yesteryear which takes the visitor back back through time, through the splendid stone portals of the houses and the narrow cobblestoned alleys.
The village streets offer glimpses of the beautiful octagonal fountain in Piazza della Podesteria and the 17th-century Palazzo Latini, recently restored.
A splendid 15th century gate that leads to the Convent of Santa Maria it is located just outside the town, while the ruins of the ancient castle of Montagliano show the signs of a glorious past.
Climbing up to the summit of Mount San Giovanni, there are the remains of an ancient abbey built on a pre-existing Roman temple, while an old mill, now in disuse, is set between two rock walls carved downstream by a rapid torrent.
The Baronial castle is very interesting. It still retains its 16th-18th-century appearance, and is composed of a central square tower, two round corner towers, and a series of sentry boxes, bulwarks and posts.
Inside the Castle is a large park with the ancient well and at the top, the keep, with its 360-degree panoramic view, you can see from Gran Sasso to the Terminillo and up to the Maiella.
The majestic scenery is at its best at sunset, when the lights of the 34 surrounding villages are turned on, all visible to the naked eye from the fortress.
The beauty of these places goes hand in hand with the tastiness of its cuisine, gnocchetti or dumplings of wheat and corn flour, bean soup, fettuccine noodles with porcini mushrooms, pizza’de’nfrasco’, cooked on embers, and then again chestnuts, honey and cheeses, products of a generous nature and long tradition.
