The village extends along the eastern side of Mount Castello, not far from the picturesque Lake Selva in the locality of Cardito, a popular destination for hikers and fishing enthusiasts.
Like other villages in the province, it was built in the early Middle Ages as a refuge from barbarian invasions, but was rebuilt several times following the disastrous earthquakes of 1349 and 1915.
Here, you can find picturesque trails that lead from the territory of Vallerotonda to the Abruzzo National Park. Of historical and landscape interest besides the lake, are the pine wood, the valley, Valle dell’Inferno, and the river canyon Wilderness Area, “Gola del Fiume Rapido”, one of the most pristine areas in the Lazio-Molise Apennines.
Mostly inaccessible, except for some traces of ancient pastoral paths, it includes the upper part of the Rapido River (a tributary of the Liri – Garigliano). Due to a characteristic karstic phenomenon, the river’s springs well up right here, making this a place of great naturalistic interest.
There is an interesting Roman era bridge on the mule track that connected the Cassinate to the Alta Ciociaria.
Worth noting is the Church of Santa Maria dell’Assunzione, for the large painting of the assumption of Mary, the numerous relics preserved in its small altar, the main bell dating to 1829, which bears not only sacred images but also the civic coat-of-arms.
For lovers of traditional Ciociara food, there are the excellent local wines, cured meats, sweets and extra virgin olive oil. You must try the tasty first courses: sagne pasta and beans, green polenta and beans, and tripe with potatoes.
