The little village of Poggio Catina lies in the heart of the lush Sabina region, amidst thick woodland and olive groves. It sits on a foothill of the south-west side of the Sabini Mountains 400 metres above the sea level. The hamlet of Catino is part of the same township and is only 1 kilometre away.

The small historic centre of Poggio Catino is home to the Churches of Sant’Agostino and of Santa Maria dei Nobili, both well-worth visiting. Other notable sites are the Church of San Rocco (14th c.). Its facade features a clock and its apse is decorated with 15th-century frescoes inside. Also interesting is the Palazzo Oligiati, now the town hall.

Catino is instead home to the picturesque ruins of the Fortress or Castle of Catino, which sits at the top of a sheer cliff of the southern side of a deep sinkhole. A two-hour hike will allow you to reach the atmospheric Hermitage of Saint Michael, hidden inside a cavern which according to a legend was the home of a terrifying dragon defeated by the saint himself.

Another interesting site at Poggio Catino are the Terme di Silla, baths probably dating back to the Imperial Roman era. They are situated near the village cemetery.
