Nestled on Mount Meta, on the Lazio side of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park and surrounded by beech, chestnut and oak woods, Picinisco offers as of today one more reason to be visited. The small village in the Comino Valley has been awarded the Orange Flag by the Touring Club italiano.
The route to Picinisco passes through unspoiled nature and breathtaking landscapes, combining physical and mental well-being, relax, nature, sustainability and faith, being a transit destination for pilgrims heading to the Canneto Valley.
Walking through the alleys and palaces of the historic centre, with their elegant facades and large stone portals, we arrive to to Piazza Fucina, with its splendid sundial and to Piazza Ernesto Capocci, with Palazzo degli Orologi and the church of San Rocco, built in 1500. From here, we can admire a wonderful view dominating the the picturesque Comino Valley.
The ancient village surrounds the Castle, built in the 11th century and now private property, with its towers and crenellated walls, reminding us of their former difensive role.
Not far from the centre, we can admire the church of Santa Maria, in Romanesque style and dating back to 1110. It houses an interesting 14th-century fresco and was probably founded on the remains of an ancient necropolis.
The village inspired the novel “The Lost Girl” by the English writer D.H.Lawrence who, in 1919 stayed in the Victorian villa known as Casa Lawrence.
This small community still preserves the charm of the traditions and local food and wine excellences, such as the pasta with the orapi (wild spinach) or the famous Pecorino di Picinisco Dop, a product of a territory particularly dedicated to sheep farming, and the ancient Maturano wine, originating from the Val di Comino and recently rediscovered.
Picinisco offers many opportunities of practicing outdoor activities in every season, such as trekking along the paths that wind through the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, among woods and streams located near the village or climbing on the Morge del Corvo, a splendid cliff immersed in the woods overlooking the Valle di Canneto and the river Melfa.
