Colli sul Velino lies in the Sabina area among the greenery at the border with Umbria, on top of a hill at an altitude of 450 metres.

The surrounding area includes Lake Ventina, the Velino River, and the Santa Susanna Canal, a popular destination for fishing lovers. A short distance from Colli sul Velino lie Rieti and Greccio, with its Franciscan sanctuary, where the first nativity scene was staged, and, not far away, it is possible to admire the beautiful Marmore Falls.

In addition to the remains of Varrone’s Villa, Colli sul Velino also boasts numerous ruins of various religious buildings, testifying to the village’s deep historical roots. The Baroque parish church of Santa Maria Maddalena was recently restored.

I resti della Villa di Quinto Assio nei pressi di Colli sul Velino

The remains of the Villa of Quintus Asius near Colli sul Velino

At the foot of Mount Castagneto (576 m), in the area of Grotte San Nicola, lie the remains of a Roman villa attributed to Senator Quintus Asius, whose cryptoportic structure is clearly visible.

The local economy, gastronomy and sports are related to fishing, due to the abundance of trout, eels, and carp swimming in the crystal-clear lake waters.
