The municipality of Cantalupo in Sabina jealously guards the Camuccini Palace Museum. It is a charming village nestled on the spurs that divide the Aia and Galantina streams, amidst olive groves in the area between the Reatini mountains and the Tiber river.
You enter the village of Cantalupo in Sabina through Porta Maggiore, marked by the ‘Bambocci’, two white marble statues of the deities Mercury and Minerva. Passing through the modern quarter, one arrives at the oldest nucleus. Here stands the beautiful Palazzo Camuccini, which Giovanni Domenico Bianchi transformed from a medieval castle into a palace in the style of Vignola. The façade of the Palazzo shows the portico crowned by a large loggia. The rear part of the Palazzo Museum still retains its ancient structure with square angular towers. Since 1862, the Palace has been owned by the Barons Camuccini, descendants of the neoclassical painter Vincenzo Camuccini (1771 – 1844), whose works are preserved in the museum inside the palace.
On the square in front of Palazzo Camuccini is the Church of Maria Santissima Assunta in Cielo, built by architects Carlo Fontana (1638 – 1714) and Francesco Rosa. The church houses a 17th-century statue of the Virgin Mary and some 17th-century paintings.
It is possible to start from Cantalupo in Sabina to explore the surrounding natural areas dominated by the Tancia and Muro Pizzo mountains to immerse yourself in nature and visit rustic villas dating back to Roman times.
The Mostra Mercato delle Stagioni takes place on the second Sunday of March, June, September and December. It is a showcase of typical gastronomic products such as oil, honey, sheep’s cheese and spelt pasta. Handicraft products markets are held together.
