Located in the hills between the Liri River to the west and the Melfa River to the east, Colfelice is the result of the union of two villages: Coldragone and Villafelice.

The flat part is furrowed by the Rio Proibito and Rio Sottile, tributaries of the Liri.

It was Duke Giacomo Boncompagni who, in order to boost the farming of his lands, ordered the construction of a small village on the top of a hill, Coldragone (the dragon stands out in fact in the Boncompagni coat of arms).

The location of this area was strategic, as it was at the confluence of three major Roman roads: the Via Latina, the Pedemontana and the Vetularia.

In the Ara Murata locality, there are many archaeological finds from the Roman period, including a remarkable epigraph of a sepulchral nature.

The Colfelice territory, within the Liri valley basin, is furrowed by important communication routes and this could lead to further economic and social development: the quiet agricultural centre has in fact been on the road to industrialisation for years (the famous Sambuca Molinari is produced there).

Legend has it that the inhabitants of neighbouring towns, envious of the prodigies performed by St Gaetano, the town’s patron saint, repeatedly tried to steal his image, which always returned to its place.
