Coreno Ausonio is a small town located at the foot of the Aurunci Mountains, halfway between the tourist locations of Scauri, Formia, Gaeta in the province of Latina, and historic Cassino and Montecassino in the province of Frosinone.

Harmonious and a little wild, it has a splendid view of the Gulf of Gaeta and the Ponziane Islands. It is possible to take interesting nature walks along the Mount Maio trails.

Its history is tied to that of Ausonia, as it was one of its wards.

Today Coreno Ausonio is known for its marble quarries, extracted from its hills since Roman times, and used to build the Appian Way, the Via Ercolana and Pompeii’s internal streets.

Coreno marble was also used to erect the great Abbey of Montecassino.

A good part of it makes up the Monti Ausoni marble basin, a District recognized by the Lazio Region, in particular for the quarrying, cutting and processing of products earmarked for export and therefore of high quality, recognized internationally.

The most sought-after marble from the District is Perlato Royal, very much in demand on the foreign market. Worth visiting is the Eco Royal Museum, with a collection of sculptures, strictly in perlato, sculpted and donated by the sculptor Angelo Di Vito.
