Gorga is a small town in the province of Rome, 86 km from the capital.

Perched in the Lepini Mountains, on the summit of Mount Volpinara, at about 766 meters above sea level, it dominates the whole valley where the Sacco River flows.

With ancient origins, Gorga still retains the character of a medieval village with the typical “elongated” structures. Its origins date back to the 11th century, as documented in a bull by Pope Urban II in the year 1088. However, there are also traces of settlements dating back to prehistoric times and the Bronze Age.

Gorga’s most beautiful and important architectural example is the monumental fountain called “La pastorella”, built in 1889 by the Ciociaro sculptor Ernesto Biondi, during the construction of the aqueduct. Located in the central piazza, the structure of the fountain recalls the caves and ravines typical of the landscape around Gorga and is surmounted by a small but beautiful shepherdess in traditional Ciociaria dress. There are also numerous remains of ancient Roman villas to be found primarily on the slopes of the Lepini Mountains. One of the most famous is Villamagna, which was the hunting lodge of Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus and Emperor Marcus Aurelius.

Gorga is also home to an Astronomical Observatory. In addition to ordinary activities, it also organizes conferences, public evenings, courses, seminars and workshops open to astronomy enthusiasts.
