A village of medieval origin located approximately 800 meters above sea level, still shows traces of walls and buildings from the feudal era. The place has the medieval structure, perched on a hill in a defensive position, protected by walls, and crossed by narrow cobblestone streets and alleys. Surrounded by the marvellous woods of Monte Aquilone, the municipality consists of four villages: Longone Sabino, Roccaranieri, San Silvestro, and Fassinoro, situated between the Velino and Turano rivers, facing Mount Terminillo. This valley is among the most picturesque in Alta Sabina, not surprisingly defined by many as “little Switzerland” due to its unique natural scenerios.

Longone Sabino celebrates Saints Cosma and Damiano on September 26th with an ancient and evocative rite; as the sun sets, all the lights are turned off, and from the church dedicated to the two saints, a procession illuminated only by candlelight winds through the village streets. At the same time, on a nearby hill, large bundles of dried broom, called “foconi,” are lit. This highly suggestive ritual commemorates the fire from which the Martyr Saints Cosmas and Damian emerged unharmed before being sentenced to beheading. It is not known precisely when the institution of the festival goes back, according to the sources it was brought by Greek monks in the Middle Ages, because the two Saints Cosmas and Damian were perhaps guests of the Abbey of San Salvatore, a gem in the monumental heritage of the entire province.

The Church of St. Anthony, built in the 17th century, is worth a visit. Inside it contains a canvas depicting the saint. Every year on August 16th, the festival of “braciola di pecora” is organized, a highly successful culinary event that attracts thousands of people from all over Lazio. The authenticity and goodness of the meat are guaranteed not only because it comes from sheep flocks grazing in the Sabina territory but also because it is seasoned with typical and entirely natural flavours and aromas: olive oil, rosemary, and vinegar. After being grilled on special grates, the meat is served on earthenware plates and bowls that can be kept as a memento of a day spent enjoying homemade cuisine and fun with the entertainment of a band.
