Abounding with woods of poplar, elm and willow trees, as well as rivers and waterfalls, a suburban park located in the Treja Valley protects the wealth of Mazzano Romano.
The town has been used several times as a film set and specifically the waterfalls of the nearby Monte Gelato. Its historic centre too can be seen in the film Destinazione Piovarolo (1956), with Totò in the role of station master.
An archway incorporated into the Palazzo Baronale dei Biscia leads you into the old town. Ancient walls enclose sites dating from different periods, such as the Palazzo Baronale di Everso e Dolce degli Anguillara (15th century). In the high part of the old town you can admire the remains of the Church of San Nicola, built in the 16th century from designs by Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola and demolished in 1940 due to its instability.
Worth visiting near the town are the archaeological sites of Narce, which bear witness to the presence of the ancient Faliscan civilization, and the Li Santi Mountain, on top of which stand the remains of a large public building and of a Roman villa.
Just outside the castle is the Church of San Sebastiano, decorated with 16th century frescoes depicting the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, between Saint Rocco and Saint Gregory Pope; and a Madonna and Child with Saint Ann. Also worth visiting are Montegelato and the Area di Narce.
Local dishes comprise broad beans and pecorino, truffle lasagna, fettuccine with porcini mushrooms, ravioli stuffed with ricotta and spinach, gnocchi with wild mushrooms, baked lamb, sausages, and the “arrosticini di castrato” (skewered mutton).
Interesting town events are the Broad Bean and Pecorino Feast in May and the Celebrations for Saint Nicholas in December.
