The village of Monteflavio lies 900 meters from the slopes of Mount Pellecchia, nestled between beech trees and conifer forests of the Monti Lucretili Regional Nature Park, 55 km from Rome.
Monteflavio, one of the villages producing Sabina PDO extra virgin olive oil, was created in 1570, when Cardinal Flavio Orsini moved the inhabitants of Marcetelli to the Montefalco estate. This new village was called Monteflavio in honour of the cardinal. The square was and still is the meeting point for the locals, especially during popular events such as the Festival of Polenta with spare ribs and mutton chops in October.
The Castle of Montefalco was built in 1200 at 900 meters s.l.m. and today its ruins can be visited, including the defensive walls, the fortress and the houses with water cisterns.
The capitals featuring the five-petal rose of the Orsini family can be admired in the Church of Maria SS. Assunta, built in the late 16th-century on the main square, at the highest point of the town. The Feast of the Madonna dell’Assunta on August 15th, the day of “Ferragosto,” is very popular, followed by the festivity dedicated to the Patron Saint San Rocco on August 16th.
