A few km from the Abbey of Montecassino, dominated by the Castle, an ancient garrison of the valley, it was damaged by WWII bombing, but restructured as a symbol of memory and peace.

Part of the vast holdings of the Abbey of Montecassino since the Middle Ages, Piedimonte preserves the remains of the Castle of the Counts of Aquino, witness to its important past in the highest part of the historical centre; it can be accessed by steps beyond the walls, and the view goes all the way to the crown of the surrounding heights and the Abbey, where you can read the message of gratitude to the Polish soldiers who fought here.

The interior space of natural materials, stone and wood, welcomes conventions and popular festivals under the banner of friendship and hospitality.

On the German defense line, further back than the Gustav Line, in May 1943, Piedimonte was seriously damaged by the bombings. And it is precisely at the Castle in May of each year that we commemorate the liberation of Piedimonte, with delegations from Poland.

An event not to be missed is the pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Canneto at 1000 msl in the National Park of Abruzzo, a very evocative religious event that has taken place for over 300 years, with pilgrims from the surrounding regions, united in the sacred tent city of the Sanctuary for three days of prayer and community life.

Also worth seeing are the churches of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo, 15th century, and Sant’Amasio, patron saint of the town.

The Fiat factory, located in the Piedimonte plain since 1972 is not only an industrial reality.

An excellent product, typical of this area for the special pedoclimatic conditions, is the Pontecorvo DOP bell pepper, very select, red, flavourful, very digestible.
