The village of Pisoniano is located in the province of Rome, 50 km from the capital, at an altitude of 532 metres above sea level. The village is named after the villa, located in the locality of Le Grotte, where the Roman aristocrat Gaius Calpurnius Piso found refuge after the conspiracy against Nero: the villa gave the name Vicus Pisonis to the whole inhabited nucleus, made up of both the patrician house and the annexed dwellings for numerous slaves and freedmen.
The municipal territory extends onto the slopes of the Prenestini Mountains, on the eastern side of Mount Guadagnolo, in the green valley of the Fiumicino stream, and is predominantly hilly, with peaceful green woods and numerous hiking trails. Particularly lovely and evocative is the Karol Wojtyla Trail which starts from Pisoniano and leads to the Sanctuary della Mentorella above, a place of worship where thousands of faithful gather each year.
