Situated fairly close to Rome amid rolling hills, San Vito Romano is ideal for excursions and pleasant strolls around the historic centre.

For those who love the challenge of rock faces, Mount Guadagnolo, which overlooks the town, is the perfect choice; indeed, it is much appreciated by local climbers. Sports fans also have the chance to try out another, slightly unusual, activity, field hockey. The Club Hockey Libero San Vito was set up back in June 1967. At the time San Vito Romano was a well-known tourist resort and it was actually a match between two holidaymakers and a San Vito resident that kicked off the whole field hockey obsession, which is still going strong today.
San Vito is rich in
footpaths“San Martino” is the most famous and starts from the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Compigliano, ending up at a little church with great views of the local countryside. You never get bored in San Vito Romano!

The historic centre is a typical medieval hill town, overlooked by Theodoli Castle, which can only be viewed from the outside.

A church well worth visiting is San Vito Martire. The main structure, the decoration of the altar, the central section of the ceiling with the canvas of the Gloria del Santo and the canvas on the altar of San Lorenzo date from the first half of the 18th century. The altar on the left is devoted to St Anne. Next to the main altar we find pictures depicting the life of the saint and his martyrdom, attributed to Aronne del Vecchio (1910-1998). The church dedicated to the Patron Saint has no bell-tower – the only bell it has is located in a raised pyramid-shaped section of the roof.

You mustn’t leave San Vito without tasting its stupendous wine!
