The Byzantine Island on Lake Bolsena reopens to the public

After three years of great success, the owner of the Byzantine Island, the largest of the two ones floating on Lake Bolsena, has decided to reopen it to the public this year, an opportunity to appreciate this extraordinary jewel of nature and history. It will be possible to visit the island during the Easter holidays on April 19, 20, 21, and 25, on  May 1, and from June 15 until November 2, 2025.

Walking for about three hours along a two-kilometre circular route immersed in uncontaminated nature and Renaissance architecture, we come across four of the seven chapels located on the island, that have undergone recent restoration: La Rocchina, Monte Calvario, Monte Tabor and Santa Concordia, as well as the beautiful Church of the Saints Giacomo and Cristoforo. Not to be missed, a visit to the Malta dei Papi, the horrible confinement place for life convicts mentioned by Dante in the Canto IX of Paradiso.

For information and on-line reservation, please visit the website www.isolabisentina.org. Boats to the Island depart from Bolsena and Capodimonte.
