On Friday, March 29, 2024 in piazza Garibaldi in Monterosi, the Sacred Representation of the Lamentation over Christ will take place for the first time, with eighteen monumental statues handmade by local masters Mario and Marco Agrestini. The event is organized by the Municipality of Monterosi, the Pro-Loco and the Parish of Santa Croce.
It took more than ten years to create these statues according to Renaissance techniques, mainly using wood, papier-mâché and plaster. The crosses with Christ and the two thieves are five metres high, while the other statues representing the characters of the Calvary are 2.40 metres high.
The statues will be on display on Good Friday, the day on which Christianity celebrates Jesus death on the cross. After the Procession, which will wind through the streets of the town, it will be possible to listen to the Pianto della Madonna by Jacopone da Todi.
The master artisans Mario and Marco Agrestini from Monterosi were already well known in Italy for the monumental largest Nativity scene in Europe. With this work the two artists, father and son, won the Gran Premio Internazionale di Venezia in 2022.
