Viticuso is a farming town established in the early Middle Ages by the monks of Montecassino close to a lake (now vanished). Encircled by mountain peaks, it is the easternmost municipality in Lazio. The fact that it is at an altitude of 825 metres guarantees the purest of air, with mountain walks along charming footpaths.
The town is surrounded by the greenery of a landscape that is largely karstic in origin, on the border with the Molise region. Excursions to the area between Mounts Maio and Cavallo are recommended.
After the Norman domination, the lords of Venafro built a castle there, whose remains can still be seen.
A plaque on the front door of a building next to the Church of S. Antonio is interesting – it bears the sculpted Benedictine symbol of three hills surmounted by a cross and is dated 1003.
Well worth a visit are the Sanctuary of S. Antonino and the Church of S. Maria Assunta.
Local festivities aimed at celebrating the origins of the town are quite fascinating. In a party atmosphere, agricultural and domestic equipment of the past, old photographs of the place, and the traditional lacework produced by the women of Viticuso are displayed to the public.
A curious fact: in Viticuso the first wind farm in Lazio was constructed; it is the only one of its kind, with two 65-metre turbines that employ advanced technology to transform wind power into electricity.
A local speciality is abbuoti, roulades filled with choice meat, mainly lamb, offal, eggs and vegetables. A festival in honour of this delicacy is held every August.
