Varco Sabino, about 95 km from Rome, is situated on a hill approximately 750 metres above sea level, within the Monte Navegna and Monte Cervia Nature Reserve and is surrounded by lush vegetation, characterized by woods of beech, turkey oak and hornbeam as well as extensive chestnut groves, cultivated since ancient times, which are of quite remarkable size in some areas.
The little town, of 13th century origin, came into being following an earthquake that destroyed the nearby village of Mirandella, on the road that led to pass connecting Sabina with Abruzzo via the Carseolani Mountains.
In the picturesque historical centre one may visit the Church of San Girolamo, which houses a bas-relief of a cross used in processions dating from the 15th century.
The Roman Bridge is charming, perfectly preserved, testifying to the importance of the area as an access route to Abruzzo.
Today, as in the past, the economy of the Varco Sabino area is largely based on agriculture and livestock farming.
The natural beauty of the shady, verdant mountains around the town, makes for perfect excursions in an unspoilt natural setting.
Worth seeing, nearby Lake Salto.
