A marvel perched on a tufaceous spur in the Valle del Treja Regional Nature Park, in 2015, Calcata was elected among Skyscanner’s “20 Spectacular Italian Villages Carved From Rock”.

Located 50 km from Rome and Viterbo, the so-called “village of artists” is one of the most important small fortified villages in Italy, with winding streets closed to cars and many breath-taking views. Walking around Calcata, a village with fewer than a thousand inhabitants and culturally active, is like jumping back into the Middle Ages, with cultural associations, conferences, concerts, theatre and flea markets for the most extravagant shopping. Hidden beneath ivy-covered arches are artists’ and artisans’ studios and workshops: furniture restoration, leather crafts, ceramics, glass, art studios, and jewellery-making. Many quaint places sell tea and coffee, good wines, traditional or alternative foods.

The Anguillara Baronial Palace, dating to the year 1000, is the town’s crown jewel, an exceptional location for exhibitions, conferences and weddings. The 14th-century Church of Santissimo Nome di Gesù is a treasure chest of Renaissance stuccos and interesting furnishings.

Ideal for trekking and horseback riding, the Valle del Treja Regional Park is home to Opera Bosco, a museum – an open-air contemporary art workshop, a journey through works of art and installations by international artists, made with natural forest materials.

Mentioned in novels, the set for numerous movies and music videos, its original beauty has impressed many artists: “Amici miei” in 1975, “La mazzetta” by Sergio Corbucci in 1978, with Nino Manfredi and Ugo Tognazzi, in 1982 “Sbirulino” with Sandra Mondaini; in 1980 the video of Fabrizio De André’s “Una storia sbagliata” and in 1991, it was mentioned by José Saramago in the novel “The Gospel according to Jesus Christ”, just to name a few.

Typical dishes include wild boar stew and very tasty mutton sauce alla calcatese.

In September the Patron Saints Cornelio and Cipriano (16) and the Celtic Festival are celebrated, while in November there is the Tree Festival at the park, Parco del Treja.
