Montelibretti RM Castello Orsini

Montelibretti

Montelibretti is the City of Cherries and fully expresses the typical aspects of the Sabina Romana region: the production of the Sabina DOP extra-virgin olive oil, unspoilt natural environment, an important breeding farm for Lipizzan horses and sulphurous and ferruginous springs.
In a horse-riding centre in the countryside of Montelibretti, film-maker Mario Monicelli recreated the Zanin farmstead of Friuli for his La Grande Guerra (1959), starring Alberto Sordi and Vittorio Gassman.
Montelibretti is 40 kilometres from Rome. Its historic centre features the majestic Palazzo Barberini (1600), built over the Orsini Castle; the Church of San Nicola di Bari (1535), with its 17th century paintings of the Madonna Enthroned with Child and Saints Domenico and Caterina; the Church of the Madonna del Carmelo, the co-patron celebrated in October, along with Saint Nicholas of Bari, celebrated on 10 May; the Church of the Madonnella; and the Town Hall Palace and the Palazzo Scuola, formerly the Town Hall, both in a 19th-century Renaissance revival style.
In Colle del Forno an Etruscan burial site was discovered and some of its finds are now displayed in the National Museum of Copenhagen. It is believed it belonged to the ancient city of Eretum. Discovered in 1970, the tombs are the underground kind with a corridor leading into the chamber.
Montelibretti is home to the Centro Polifunzionale di Sperimentazione, a CNR and a CONI centre, and an Italian army base.
On the table of the people of Montelibretti there will always be the juicy locally-grown cherries, peaches, prunes and the typical flatbread. The local bread, “Pane Casareccio di Montelibretti”, is something absolutely worth trying. The traditional dishes are fettuccine with giblets sauce, the hand-made egg pasta with asparagus, plain hand-made pasta with chick peas, fettuccine with garlic, oil and tomatoes, fried bread dough, meat and liver sausages and roast pork belly.
Interesting events are the Celebration of Saint Anthony Abbot in January and the Spring Festival featuring the historical re-enactment of life in the Renaissance and a joust.
