Sermoneta, about 90 km from Rome and about 20 from Latina, lies on a hill that is part of the Lepini Mountains, in an imposing position overlooking the Pontina Plain, surrounded by olive groves and chestnut and beech woods.

Sermoneta is the most intact and possibly the most picturesque town in the Lepiniarea, with its perfectly preserved urban layout, all enclosed by stone walls, filled with quaint little streets, squares and alleyways where it’s fun to get lost and admire the various sights.

Among these, certainly worth an in-depth visit is the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria, the Church of Giuseppe or of the Immacolata Concezione, the former synagogue, the Church of the Annunziata, the Merchants’ Loggia (the old Town Hall), the Convent of San Francesco with its famous Holm Oak tree, over 500 years old, and the Belvedere, a terrace with an amazing panoramic view, from which the Pontina Plain can be admired.

But the symbol of the town is undoubtedly the magnificent Caetani Castle, built in the 13th century, which dominates the town centre and was restored by Gelasio Caetani in the late 19th century. Every year, the Castle, owned by the Roffredo Caetani Foundation (as is the nearby Nymph Garden), stages important national and international events, such as the Pontino Festival of Chamber Music and educational and advanced music courses.

Close to the town we find the splendid Abbey of Valvisciolo, one of the very first examples of Gothic-Cistercian architecture in Italy.

Unmissable events include the fascinating Re-enactment of the Battle of Lepanto, which takes place in the town streets in period costume, and the celebrated Polenta Festival.

Another suggestion is to sail along the the River Cavata in a canoe, surrounded by natural beauty, following a route that give us the chance for a swim in the source of the river, passing sights and constructions (eg dams, Roman remains) of immense historical, cultural and e religious interest.

The town was awarded also in 2018 the Orange Flag for environmental/tourist excellence.
