Appia Antica: the UNESCO candidacy is official

The Via Appia Antica has been officially nominated for the candidacy as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The final step will be the evaluation by the UNESCO International Advisory Council expected for 2024.

The Regina Viarum, an ancient Route of extraordinary beauty, with a millennial history, seems to meet the requirements for the coveted award. Its construction began around 300 BC, and, throughout history, it has been an economic and cultural crossroads towards the Mediterranean and the Eastern civilizations.

The recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is of great importance for the enhancement and safeguarding of this precious Route, which preserves spectacular remains of imperial villas and aqueducts.

Visit Lazio supports the Via Appia Antica in the achievement of this prestigious prize. By entering the UNESCO List, this precious inheritance will continue to shine intact in the eyes and souls of future generations.
