Between the borders of Lazio and Abruzzo, the Mount Càntari chain extends for slightly more than 10 km. The short length of its elevations contrasts with the height of its peaks, among which Mount Viglio stands out at more than 2156 m, located in the Northern central area of the chain.

The destination of many hiking enthusiasts, Mount Viglio occupies a great part of the mountain range of Càntari, covering a significant portion of the territory that goes from Campo Staffi to Campo Catini.

BREATHTAKING LANDSCAPES AND UNSPOILT NATURE

Nordic walking and hiking enthusiasts gather every year to revisit the pathways of the mountain, admire the unspoilt nature and enjoy the landscapes and splendid views. Once having arrived at the peak, the most tenacious visitors can admire the Fucino Valley that extends onto Ciociaria and the Mount Simbruini chain.

ATTRACTIVE IN WINTER TIME BUT BE CAUTIOUS IN THE SNOW!

The itinerary to Mount Viglio is considered one of medium difficulty, recommended in winter for those who are more familiar with tall peaks, due to the snow that surely makes them more fascinating, but also more impervious, like the path that connects the Gendarme peak to Cantari, often covered with snow. During the milder seasons, it is accessible to a wider range of hikers who can choose among the most beaten tracks.

THE ITINERARIES

The first section is the easiest one: a walk starting from Sant’Antonio Pass that winds its way through the forest populated by beeches and oaks. At a certain point Mount Cotento can be seen.

Continuing the climb, the trail leads to the second itinerary, less relaxing, but more evocative. It passes through Fonte della Moscosa and Mount Piano, with the forests that lead to the view of Val Roveto to the East, with the characteristic cross, a resting point.

Still climbing, you come to the third trail, the most impervious, that first crosses the Cantari chain and then the Gendarme one, touching the 2156 meters of the peak of Mount Viglio, the highest one after Terminillo.
