Giuliano di Roma It’s a medieval village with characteristic corners and narrow streets that go up to the historic, pedestrian centre.
Palazzo Bretagna hosts the MUVE, the Museum of Ernic Volcanism.
Between hills and mountains, the historic centre, nearly circular, is dominated by the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, from 1783, and its unique detached bell tower, 30 meters high, originally the keep of the Castle; the beautiful interior works and the wooden choir are also worth to be seen.
Within the historic centre, it is worth a visit is Palazzo Bretagna with its beautiful rooftop garden, location of the Museum of Ernic Volcanism, dedicated to the understanding of volcanism and the captivating world of geology.
The museum is not coincidentally located in Giuliano: the hill, on which the village stands, was the summit of an important eruptive centre, one of the 20 centres in the Latin Valley, now inactive volcano mouths.
The historic centre of the village has preserved the atmosphere of the medieval village, with alleys, small steps, and glimpses, once dotted with workshops and cellars carved into volcanic tuff, where you can stroll freely with you children, at the end of a day on the beaches of San Felice Circeo, just a few kilometres away.
The typical dish of the village is undoubtedly I maccaruni cugli feri, a characteristic pasta shaped like holed spaghetti achieved through the skillful use of an ‘iron’; and among the dairy products not to be missed are the mozzarella and buffalo ricotta, both PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) products.
