The view is lost along Lake Bracciano. The large mirror of water of volcanic formation frames the characteristic municipality of Anguillara Sabazia.
It takes its name from an ancient Roman villa called ‘Angularia’, because it was built at the point where the coastline forms a right angle.
The history of the village is linked to the Anguillara family, who held the feud until 1488 and were not much popular with the local population. The ancient village has preserved its original medieval structure, becoming a popular tourist destination.
Tradition, including culinary tradition, has always been closely linked to lake life. Following the lakeside, one can visit the famous Museo dell’Aeronautica (Air Force Museum) and enjoy the panorama, from fishing to minigolf, from camping to small boat hire. The waters of Lake Bracciano lend themselves to many sports activities such as sailing, rowing, surfing and diving.
The symbol of the town is the Fontana delle Anguille (Fountain of the Eels), located on the piazzetta del belvedere. Also not to be missed are the Chiesa della Collegiata and the 16th century Palazzo Baronale, now the town hall, where precious restored frescoes are preserved. The small Chiesa dell’Assunta houses the Madonna and Child, the Assumption by Girolamo Muziano and some angels from the 15th century.
A Neolithic village dating back some 8,000 years was discovered at La Marmotta. It is the oldest Neolithic settlement so far found on the shores of the lake in the whole of Europe. In the second half of the 5th millennium B.C., a number of peoples came up the river Arrone, the outlet of Lake Bracciano, to settle at La Marmotta. These populations made man’s greatest discovery: agriculture. In the submerged village they also worked special ceramics. The dugout canoes and all the other findings from 1994 onwards are in the ” Museo Preistorico Pigorini” in Rome.
Typical local cuisine focuses on the preparation of freshwater fish. Among the best known first and second courses are eel alla cacciatora, golden fried pike, pasta with lake fish sauce and fried or marinated latterino.
