Numerous Etruscan-Roman proofs reveal its ancient origins. The village was established in the medieval period. Periods of great splendor are characterized by the presence of high ecclesiastical figures who sought refuge here when invaders threatened Rome. Proof of this “renaissance” of Montefiascone is the Cathedral of Santa Margherita. Inside, there is the imposing dome designed by architect Carlo Fontana in 1674.
Rocca dei Papi
The Church of Sant’Andrea is one of the oldest in the village, situated in the historic centre near the original city walls. The Church of San Flaviano is perhaps the most representative monument and consists of two overlapping churches. The Rocca di Montefiascone, or Rocca dei Papi, is the focal point of political and cultural history. It was, in fact, the residence of the Popes who chose it as a refuge during the sieges of Rome.
Montefiascone boasts many local products. Its excellence lies in its wines, including the famous white Est! Est!! Est!!! The name derives from an inscription (EST! meaning “there is” in Italian) that Bishop Defuk had Martino put on the doors of the most deserving Italian taverns. It is said that Martino was overwhelmed by the quality of the local wine and signalled it to the bishop with triple emphasis!
Also excellent are cheeses and cured meats, such as the aged Etruscan ham. Among the culinary specialties, do not miss the rabbit roll.
