The municipality of Campagnano di Roma arose in the 9th century on the slopes of Mount Razzano, in the volcanic area of the Sabatini mountains.
The historical centre of Campagnano di Roma preserves many testimonies of the original mediaeval core and the 17th-century extension, such as the ‘Porta Romana’, the mediaeval towers, the ‘Collegiata’ and the Bell Tower. The Church of San Giovanni was erected in 1515 on top of a pre-existing paleochristian church, of which it re-employs some decorative elements.
In the mediaeval centre, the 16th-century ‘Chiesa del Gonfalone’, with its Clock Tower, the ‘Fontana dei Delfini’ by Vignola and the ‘Fontana Secca’ with the coats of arms of Campagnano di Roma and the Orsini family are not to be missed. Palazzo Venturi houses the Archaeological Museum.
Leaving the centre, you will come across the 11th-century ‘Chiesa della Pietà’, which houses a beautiful fresco from 1518. In Baccano you can visit the Mansio ad Vacanas, an archaeological site from Roman times, and the majestic remains of the Granai Chigi. Campagnano di Roma is on the Via Francigena of the North. The Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Sorbo houses a splendid 13th century painting of the ‘Madonna and Child’.
In Campagnano Romano, try the ‘carciofata’ grilled on vine and honey, to which a festival is dedicated in September. The Romanesco lGP artichoke of Campagnano is obtained from only one artichoke card per plant.
