At almost 800 m high, in the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, among peaks reaching 2000 m, Settefrati is the starting point of the pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Canneto.
The historic centre has an almost circular urban plan, with narrow and steep streets that converge towards the square and the church of Santo Stefano, with the bell tower.
The many churches of the small village are also worth a visit, such as the Madonna delle Grazie, with a beautiful, coffered ceiling and, in the atrium, the depiction of the Last Judgment according to the vision of Brother Alberico, who, it is said, inspired Dante’s Divine Comedy. We also can admire the Church of Santa Maria della Tribuna, in one of the most evocative panoramic points of the entire Comino Valley, and the Sanctuary of the Black Madonna of Canneto.
In a fantastic naturalistic setting, through a panoramic road, in 10 km you reach the Sanctuary, with the Madonna venerated by the many emigrants from the Comino Valley, by pilgrims from Lazio and the neighbouring regions, and also by travellers who, on the occasion of the festival on August 22, reach the sanctuary on foot at night.
For about ten years an important gastronomic-culinary event has been held there, the “Magnalonga”.
Typical of the area is Pecorino di Picinisco DOP, excellent on all occasions, which can also be tasted during the Magnalonga, an event not to be missed on the last Saturday of August, essential for a journey among the traditional Ciociaria flavours of the Valcomino.
