The toponym Vacone derives from the cult of the Goddess Vacuna and from the fact that in these places there must have been a fanum vacunae, a temple dedicated to the goddess. The cult of Vacuna was widely followed in ancient Sabina and even Numa Pompilius, Sabine king of Rome, taught the Romans to respect his divinity.
