The process of Gaeta and Latina up to win the title of Italian Capital of Culture 2026 is being carried out. The two towns individual projects, included in the Short List of the ten final candidates, were submitted, on March 4, 2024, to the Ministero della Cultura. The winner will be announced by March 29, 2024.
Gaeta is a sea town of art and myth and Latina a young, modern city of the 20th century.
The two Pontine municipalities in Lazio are therefore ready for the title of Italian Capital of Culture 2026, thanks to two projects evaluating the best qualities of the sites and the rich, original personality of the inhabitants.
This ambitious title represents for the territory a new push towards urban regeneration projects aimed at enhancing the cultural and landscape heritage, improving tourist services and reestablishing economic development.
The first competition for the title of Italian Capital of Culture was held in 2014. Since then, the entitlement is awarded every year by the Consiglio dei Ministri upon proposal of the Ministero della Cultura.
Todate, no town in Lazio has ever won the prestigious award
