The municipality of Agosta is in the lush green Aniene Valley. This small village of about 2000 inhabitants is nestled between the Ruffini, Affilani, Ernici and Simbruini mountains.
Prominent in the landscape of Agosta is the medieval castle erected in 1051, around which the village was built. The legend goes that a princess named Augusta was imprisoned in the tower. It was thus that the village took the name Agosta.
The Arco del Cardinale or della Porta was erected in 1503 in Romanesque style near the old bridge over the river Aniene, in honour of Cardinal Giovanni Colonna.
The Sanctuary of the Madonna del Passo is located along the Via Sublacense. On the high altar is a fresco depicting the Madonna that was found in 1616 after a miraculous event. For this reason, the Sanctuary was previously named Madonna degli Angeli.
Among the typical products and dishes of Agosta are fried frogs to be tasted at the Festival on the second Sunday in August. Local handicrafts include the typical wicker basketry.
