Nestled among the hills on a a tuff plateau at the foot of the Cimini Mountains, Arlena di Castro is the perfect place for lovers of nature and relax, as well as archaeology and traditional festivals..
The area around the village is rich in Etruscan burials and necropolises, such as the one discovered in Ararella, along the Caninese provincial road, where pit tombs dug into the tuff rock and covered with protective tiles are still visible. Nearby stand the ruins of the Castelvecchio city walls, which suggest the presence of an imposing castle with strong bastions and splayed windows on the external façade. Since 1630, the site has been called Roccaccia di Sopra, due to its state of abandonment.
Worth a visit, in the historic centre, stand the Baroque Church of San Giovanni Battista, the Oratory of the Holy Sepulchre, and, just outside the northern edge of the small town, the Church of San Rocco, dating back to 1460.
The mild climate and the calcareous, volcanic soils typical of Arlena di Castro and the Tuscia Viterbese make possible the cultivation of the Canino Green Asparagus IGP, a local gastronomic delicacy with a distinctive flavour. Another typical product from the same area is the excellent Canino DOP extra virgin olive oil.
