Civita di Bagnoregio e Bolsena both located in the province of Viterbo, have been unanimously nominated by the Ministry of Culture as Italian Capitals of Contemporary Art 2028.
The joint bid of these two Lazio towns “Arte che viene, Arte che va”, developed over months of consultation with artists, institutions, schools, and associations, prevailed over other three finalists: Capri, Padua, and Pozzuoli.
This recognition will enable Civita di Bagnoregio and Bolsena to carry on a programme of contemporary art initiatives and a dialogue between culture and nature. By promoting these two villages, the initiative will provide a lasting cultural legacy for future generations. The project views contemporary art not merely as a series of events, but also as a genuine cultural infrastructure continuing well beyond 2028.
The two gorgeous medieval towns of Civita di Bagnoregio, already a candidate UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Bolsena, on the shores of the largest volcanic lake in Europe, will receive one million euros to implement their cultural initiatives
