The municipality of Belmonte Castello is the ancient Bellus Mons. It rises on a rocky spur between the narrow valley connecting the Comino Valley and the city of Cassino, dominated by the dense forests of Mount Cairo.
The ancient castle was destroyed in World War II bombings. All that remains of the ancient Belmonte Castello are two stone columns at the entrance. It is interesting to visit the beautiful 14th-century frescoes in the Church of San Nicola (12th century), and the remains of the Roman Aqueduct carved into the rock.
In the 19th century, textile handicrafts flourished in Belmonte Castello and the ancient tools for processing hemp are still preserved.
Beneath the ground of the village of Belmonte Castello flows the Rio Secco river. Visit the Fosse, the two rocky craters of uncertain nature more than 130 metres deep. At the bottom of the Fosse a rustling sound can be heard and a cold wind gushes out of the rocky holes, possibly caused by the flow of underground water. No one knows where the water springs from.
Among the most popular dishes in Belmonte Castello are tagliolini with faglioli and pecorino cheese.
