One of the main economic centres, 70 kilometres from Rome, Colleferro is a lively town that has seen considerable residential development over the recent decades.
The city preserves precious testimonials to the past by offering the possibility of visiting the remains of the Piombinara Castle and Tower.
The castle dominated a wide hill and plateau, strategically positioned to guard the valley of the Sacco River (hence the name Castrum Fluminariae) and the Via Latina.
After the war, the traditional industries fell on hard times, but the construction of the Aviation plant, which produces parts for the ESA space vessels, makes Colleferro the “Space-age City”.
Do not miss the modern Romanesque-style Church of Santa Barbara, with its façade punctuated by concrete pillars designed by Riccardo Morandi.
Located in the municipality are the Archaeological Museum of the Toleriense Territory which preserves finds from local archaeological sites, with testimonials to human life in the area from the prehistoric age up to the Middle Ages, and the Civic Museum of Telecommunications, dedicated to Guglielmo Marconi.
Near the town, the ‘La Selva’ Nature Park in the locality of Paliano covers 45 hectares.
The local gastronomy is related to Roman cuisine.
Especially noteworthy are the fettuccine with papalina, a variant of carbonara, artichoke hearts with marjoram, panzerotti alla romana, the mustaccioli, typical sweets covered with a chocolate glaze and, inside, a soft pastry with the flavour of honey and candied fruit.
