The Etruscan Riviera extends for 85 kilometres, from Marina di Pescia Romana to Ladispoli, along the Maremma coast of the Lazio region. Defining its landscape are pine woods and wide sand beaches, like those at Riva dei Tarquini and Santa Marinella, known as the “pearl” of the Tyhrrenian Sea.
Montalto di Castro, Tarquinia, Civitavecchia, Santa Marinella and Ladispoli are of great historical and cultural interest for their traces of Etruscan civilization. The hinterland comprises the towns of Vulci, Tuscania, Allumiere, Tolfa and Cerveteri.
The coast slopes gently towards the sea and is made up of wide beaches fringed by vast pine woods.
The beach sand is dark due to the presence of volcanic minerals transported by water courses or produced by the erosion of the coast. Tourism on the Riviera began developing in the 1950s. The equipped beaches of the Riviera are still very popular in summer.
