Situated in the Lucretili Mountains Park, between the Tiber and Turano rivers, Montorio Romano dominates the Tiber Valley. The town lies in the area which produces the Extra-virgin Olive Oil Sabina DOP and it is often described as a “balcony over Rome” since on clear days you can glimpse the Cupola of St Peter’s and the Tyrrhenian Sea, even though the capital is over 50 km away.

Apparently the yellow-gold colour of the tufa rock gave the town its name, deriving from Mons Aureus. Possibly built by exiles seeking refuge in the mountains, according to old records, Montorio Romano has been ruled over by the noble families Savelli, Orsini and Barberini.

The Baronial Palace is situated in the oldest part of the town, Montaterra. On 6 November, the locals commemorate the Patron Saint Leonardo, to whom a charming church outside the walls of the ancient castle is dedicated.

Wine and the Extra-virgin Olive Oil Sabina DOP are traditional specialities of the area.
