The village of Posta Fibreno overlooks the “Riserva Regionale Naturale Lago di Posta Fibreno”, the Comino and the Liri Valley, from a hill leaned to the mountains of the “Parco Nazionale Abruzzo Lazio e Molise”. In 2025, the American TV network CNN included the springs of Posta Fibreno Lake among the eight Italian destinations away from the mass tourism.

Posta Fibreno
“I love this healthiness and amenity, especially since I arrived here. I can’t get enough of such a great wonder“
This is how Cicero described the deep blue Posta Lake, or Fibreno, the highlight of the naturalistic oasis, which also hosts the small Ciociaro village of Posta Fibreno. The name Posta probably derives from the vernacular posita, (rightly located), while Fibreno from the Fiber-Fibri, some fish-loving animals living in the lake.

The floating island in the lake of Posta Fibreno
The natural landscape of this lake is dominated by the typical lake reeds, the right habitat for birds to nest. Walking along the Catannovo Path, we will reach a small island, which floats on a body of water connected to the lake by canals. Called “La Rota“, it was already mentioned by Pliny the Elder in his “Naturalis Historia” two thousand years ago.
On this karst lake, we can spot now and then a silently sliding wooden boat, the nàue, still used by some fishermen. The picnic area among olive trees, dry stone walls and terraces, preserves a water mill, from 1810, now in use for didactic purposes..

In 1977, in the Codigliane area, a steel and platinum cross by the late sculptor Pino Bonavenia has been planted on the bottom of the lake. During the “Feast of the Lake Crucifix and Divers”, celebrated on the first Saturday of August, the cross is brought back to the surface.

Finally, do not miss the opportunity of taking a selfie in front of the boomerang-shaped sign “Un Bacio Apposta per te” (A Kiss just for You) along the banks of the Lake at sunset!
In the first half of October, the “Ciclostorica dalle cascate al lago” is held, a loop race on vintage bikes from the Cascata Grande in Isola del Liri to the to the Lake and back. Two more routes, winding between the Middle Liri and Comino Valleys, owe their names to famous figures who visited Ciociaria, such as the thirty-seven kilometres “Cicerone”, or the eighty kilometres “Munazio Planco”.
