Roccagorga is a small hilly town about 110 km from Rome and about 32 km. from Latina, located on Monte Nero (287 m.) in the Lepini Mountains.
The territory, rich in olive groves, which alternates hilly coasts both barren and sometimes wooded, date back to the 9th century but developed in the Middle Ages under the dominion of the Counts of Ceccano.
Interesting is the Baronial Palace, which houses the Ethnomuseum of the Lepini Mountains and describes the story of the evolution of the Roccagorga community. Also worth visiting is the Air Force Museum, which preserves, among its most interesting documents, a copy of Francesco Baracca’s war diary.
Those who are attracted by more intimate, peaceful atmospheres can find, at around 850 m. of height the Hermitage of S. Erasmo (XI-XII), with the sanctuary and the monastery, frequented until the end of the 1960s, now a hostel.
Roccagorga is appreciated by sportsmen who love to practice mountain biking, trekking and hiking, following the paths of the Ulivo-Arco – which crosses the city’s crown of olive groves for more than 4 km – and the Leccio-Hermitage of S. Erasmo, which reaches the foothills of the Anchevisa.
The local culinary specialities give great prominence to the authentic and genuine flavours of tradition: goat meat, the vegetable soup called “rappagacornuti”; the “ciammotte” (snails), the olive oil and the delicious strawberry grapes.
