Salvador Dalí’s Christ in Rome, an extraordinary event

A visit to the exhibition of the masterpiece by Salvador Dalí, the Christ of San Juan de la Cruz, on display in the Church of San Marcello al Corso in Rome until June 23, 2024, is an opportunity not to be missed.

The impressive canvas by the famous Spanish artist, depicting the Christ seen from above and facing the world in the dark, is displayed next to the drawing-relic believed to have been created by Saint John of the Cross, which inspired Dalí’s work.

Two very different artworks, the one from 1951 on a majestic canvas and the one from 1574 on a barely sketched piece of paper, are however united by the same spiritual contemplation of the Christ.

The exhibition is the third stage of the “Open Skies” Artistic Festival, a cultural initiative in anticipation of the Holy Year 2025. The renowned masterwork by the Spanish artist Salvador Dalí comes from the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, while the work by Saint John of the Cross was transferred from the Saint’s reliquary in the Monastery de la Encarnación in Ávila, in Spain.
