The medieval village of Terelle cannot be seen from the Liri Valley below, immersed as it is in nature and perched at 900 metres on Mount Cairo, whose top, at almost 1700 metres, can be reached from the Casermette refuge through different paths.
The view up there is stunning, embracing the mountains of the “Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise”, the Abbey of Montecassino, the Caserta Plain and the Tyrrhenian Sea.

The burg was built around the Castle in 1127, on a ridge of Mount Cairo, by order of the Count d’Aquino Pandolfo, who aimed to control the estates of the Montecassino monks. During the Second World War, the village was almost totally destroyed, due to its vicinity to Montecassino and its strategical position, connecting Aquino and the Liri Valley with the Comino Valley.

Autumn is the best time to enjoy an unforgettable experience in the “Castagneto Monumentale di Terelle”. This impressive chestnut grove just outside the village hosts huge centuries-old trees, the largest one measuring twelve metres width and the oldest being 800 years of age.

DOC Chestnuts of Terelle
The Grove produces the Terelle DOC chestnuts, whose typical sweetish flavour enhances many local dishes, such as soups and desserts. Since 1982, The Terelle Chestnut Festival has been taking place every year on the first half of November.
